When comparing area rugs and wall-to-wall carpeting, it's also important to consider health benefits that both have. With area rugs, there are two types - hand-made pieces (with natural fibers, wool/silk/cotton) and machine-made (which use synthetic materials and glues, which can have negative health benefits). Wall-to-wall carpeting has been improving in regards to materials used, but often the glues and synthetic materials can aggravate allergies or health issues. Another thing to mention is the ease of cleaning area rugs compared to wall-to-wall carpeting - area rugs can be cleaned all the way through, or moved around to get the dust that can collect underneath- with wall-to-wall, it is very difficult to clean all the dust and dirt that can go through to the bottom - and stays there for years.
